Arterial atherosclerosis is a degenerative process in our body that can lead to the closure of important blood vessels and life-threatening heart attacks or strokes. Hard and brittle cerebral arteries rupture and bleed more easily under high pressure. This can lead to a brain hemorrhage, usually with tragic and irreversible consequences.
Atherosclerosis affects only arterial blood vessels (vessels that carry blood to tissues and organs) and does not occur in veins (vessels that return blood to the heart) or capillaries (tiny vessels where nutrient exchange occurs in tissues). This is because the factor initiating plaque formation is a micro-injury to the arterial lining, which our body repairs by forming plaque containing calcium and cholesterol. This micro-injury occurs partly due to the impact of blood flow (blood pressure) on the inner arterial wall, and the greater the blood pressure, the greater the injury. Because veins have low pressure, atherosclerosis does not develop there.
In addition to blood pressure and many other risk factors for atherosclerosis (including high cholesterol in the blood), the process of proper healing of micro-injuries to the inner arterial wall and the fate of the plaque (if atherosclerosis is the result of this healing) is crucial.
The glycocalyx is responsible for the reaction processes of the inner vessel wall to harmful factors.
The glycocalyx is a micro-thin gel covering the surface of the endothelium of every artery, vein, and capillary. It protects the endothelium surface and regulates the following functions: it conducts flow stimulation to the endothelial lining cells for nitric oxide production, stores extracellular superoxide dismutase, acts as a barrier selectively allowing molecules and cells (such as leukocytes and LDL cholesterol), inhibits platelet aggregation, contains factors regulating blood clotting, and prevents leukocytes from adhering to the vessel wall.
Recently, a supplement called Arterosil HP appeared on the market, aimed at supporting the healthy function of the glycocalyx. Also, in studies on mice (Drexler University) that spontaneously and rapidly develop atherosclerosis, a 60% reduction in aortic plaque was observed in the group of animals that received the key Arterosil ingredient supporting glycocalyx health, after 12 weeks of the experiment. Arterosil was also studied for its effect on elevated blood pressure (The Hypertension Research Institute at St. Thomas West Hospital). When using Arterosil in a typical dose (1 capsule twice a day) in a group of subjects, an average reduction of diastolic pressure by 10.9 mm Hg over 3 months and an average reduction of systolic pressure by 8.9 mm Hg over 2 months was observed. In a study on arterial elasticity after Arterosil administration, an average increase of 89.6% in elasticity was observed 2 hours after taking 1 capsule of the supplement (Baylor Heart Institute Campus). This may indicate a very rapid and beneficial effect of Arterosil on endothelial function releasing vasoregulatory nitric oxide. The study involved a group of 19 individuals of both sexes aged 22 to 64 and was conducted using a digital pulse analysis device.
